2022 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show Gold Medals

Gapsted Estate is renowned for producing exceptional wines from alternative grape varieties that thrive in the Alpine Country and was recently awarded three GOLD medals at the 2022 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show for the 2021 Ballerina Canopy Saperavi, 2021 Valley Selection Primitivo and 2022 Secret Harvest Grand Manseng. These three wines demonstrate our ongoing commitment to excellence and the driving force behind our winery and team. By crafting wines of purity, precision and power while nurturing the individuality of the Alpine country and the personality of each variety, we take our customers on an exciting journey of discovery.

Saperavi, an icon variety for our winery, has been grown in the country of Georgia for 8,000 years.  It is a teinturier variety and as such produces wines that are profoundly coloured.  The wine’s aromas and flavours have an exotic and untamed quality about them. It has a wholly individual palate unlike any other. Grown on the estate vineyard in Gapsted, the hand-crafted wines have received many awards over the years and the 2021 Ballerina Canopy Saperavi is no exception. The wine proffers intense aromas of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, floral nuances with underlying sweet spices and toast. The wine is like essence.  It is thick and concentrated on the palate, tasting like a fruit reduction of blackcurrants. The palate flavours are interwoven with toasty oak and fine velvety tannins. The wine is very youthful and will continue to evolve slowly over the next 15+ years.

The Italian red variety, Primitivo, known in the USA as Zinfandel, has quickly become one of our most awarded varieties since our 2021 Valley Selection King Valley Primitivo was released in mid-2022. It is a powerful wine that shows generosity, richness and refinement. It has a full gamut of aromas and flavours from thyme, oregano and black tea to black cherry, boysenberry, and blackcurrant. The palate is full bodied with a mouth filling chalky structure that make it a great food wine – especially with rich Italian style dishes. It will continue to settle down and reach it’s peak drinking over the next 10+ years.

Grand Manseng (translated: Large Manseng) is a white wine grape variety that is grown primarily in Southwest France, and is part of the Manseng family. It produces intensely flavoured and rich wines with high natural acidity and is prized for its ability to age. Unlike many white wine grapes, the Grand Manseng skins are thick and the juice requires a gentle and thoughtful approach to winemaking to allow clear varietal and Alpine country expression. Our estate-grown 2022 Secret Harvest Grand Manseng shows honeysuckle, pear, and citrus aromatics which are naturally mirrored on the palate. The palate has a richness and power, balanced with natural acidity that this variety does so well.
