Dan Traucki on our Valley Selection Primitivo

Gapsted Wines' Valley Selection Primitivo

Our Valley Selection 2021 Primitivo is a Gapsted team favourite already, we can't stop telling everyone how much we love it! It just brought home a GOLD medal from the 2022 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show, secured 95 points/equal top in category at Winestate Magazine Emerging Varietals Wine Show and we know there will be more awards to come. But don't just take our word for it. Over to you Dan Traucki...

"This week I am talking about the Italian red variety, Primitivo, which is the same as the (original) Croatian native variety, Tribidrag, and in the USA is known as, Zinfandel. There have been/are lots of arguments over this topic, but as far as I have been able to discover all three are the same variety. The difference between Primitivo and Zinfandel being that Primitivo is usually picked earlier/slightly less ripe and therefore makes a tighter, more austere, long-lived wine, whereas Zinfandel is picked ubber ripe and makes a rich, blousy, almost OTT wine.

I have been a big fan of Zinfandel since I tasted it on my first trip to the USA in the early 1980s. It is only much more recently that I have come to appreciate Primitivo in its own right, rather than seeing it as a wasted opportunity to make a Zinfandel. A bit like un-oaked Chardonnay vs moderately oaked, rich, buttery sumptuous Chardonnay – if you know what I mean.

Anyhow, today’s wine is the Gapsted VALLEY SELECTION Limited Release King Valley (Victoria) Primitivo 2021. This is a brilliant wine and an outstanding example of what Primitivo has to offer. It has a fascinating bouquet, a melange of dried herbs, red berries plus a modicum of vanillin oak, all rolled together.

The palate is most appealing and superbly tasty with lively, bright red fruit, just a hint of earthiness and crisp, zingy acidity typical of the variety, making it a great food wine – especially with richer, oilier Italian style dishes.

A fabulous food wine now, it will evolve, round-out and soften-off so that with proper cellaring, in a few years it will be an absolute ripper wine on its own."
