Wine Tours

There are a number of companies that operate wine tours throughout the North East region, some by bicycle and others using buses.

Tour De Vines is a regular visitor to the winery. This company operates a wide variety of cycling tours in the region, including the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. This two-day tour includes an exclusive food and wine tasting at Gapsted Wines, and has regular departure dates throughout the year.

A Taste of Wine Tours is another such provider. This firm offers a range of bus tours, from half day through to multi day trips, picking you up and dropping you off at your local residence or hotel.

Alpine Spirit – High Country Coaches Travelling with a locally owned and operated family business ensure that your wine experiences are of the highest quality and service, with drivers  that know the valley well. Alpine Valleys Winery tours can cater for various group sizes of 1-6, 7-13, 14-24 & 25-48.

Taxi

Operating out of Myrtleford, the local Alpine Community Taxi is available from 8am-5pm Mondays-Thursdays and Sundays. On Fridays and Saturdays their operating time extends until 1.30am.

The taxi services areas as far as 75-100km away from Myrtleford, which includes Albury, Wangaratta, Bright, Beechworth and Milawa.

You can reach Shane on 0427 553 330 for bookings, or via Facebook at @alpinecommunitytaxi and they also have a 7-seater available for bookings in advance.

Other Taxi options are as follows:

Wangaratta Taxis (03) 5721 8888
Bright Taxi Service 0423 015 152.

Bicycle

Being located directly on the sealed Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, Gapsted Wines is the ideal place to cycle to. The Trail, which extends more than 100km from Wangaratta to Germantown (just south of Bright) - with an off shoot to Beechworth - is almost completely off road and perfect for a short amble through to a long cycle tour adventure. The gradient is generally subtle, and the diversity in scenery is stunning - particularly as you edge towards the magnificent mountains in the south.

We have ample bicycle parking available, and if you reserve your table at our restaurant in advance, we'll ensure you have plenty of sustenance to continue your cycling adventure!

And if you don't have your own bike, or would rather not transport it here, there are plenty of places who can rent you one - including some accommodation providers.

Here are just a few local cycle stores that rent bikes and the ever increasingly popular eBikes that make cycling a dream. eBikes can be hired in Bright with a range between 90km’s – 120km’s, so you can ride longer and explore further, creating a true pedal to produce experience.

Public Transport

It's possible to get close to Gapsted Wines using public transport. While public transport isn't necessarily a viable option to get to the winery itself, the various train and coach services do enable you to get from Melbourne to towns in the region quite easily.

It's even possible to do a day trip between Monday and Friday, assuming you get the first train service out of Melbourne, and the last service back. Or, make a long weekend of it - get a Friday service from Melbourne, and return Sunday afternoon.

If you're coming from Melbourne, there are currently three trains daily that leave Southern Cross Station for Wangaratta at 7.05am, 12.05pm and 6.02pm. Returning from Wangaratta, there are train services at 7.27am, 1.37pm and 6.12pm.

These trains connect with a coach that services Beechworth, Myrtleford and Bright, although on weekends this is limited to one coach service, which departs at 10.05am from Wangaratta Station and which links with the 7.05am train from Southern Cross.

From Albury, you can get a train to Wangaratta at various times of the day, although they don't necessarily link with the above coach service. You can also get a limited bus service to Myrtleford on school days only. You can learn more about this service here

Public Transport Victoria has an online Journey Planner which is extremely useful in learning how to get here. We strongly recommend you check this website first, as the above departure times are subject to change and seasonal variations.

Helicopter

What? Really? Yes - you can get to Gapsted Wines by helicopter, landing at our top car park (giving us plenty of advance notice of course) using Hi Life Helicopters

You can leave from Porepunkah Airport (near Bright), or from many other locations - contact Brian on 0418 573 764 for more information.

While the above list of suppliers isn't exhaustive, it's a good place to start planning your next High Country adventure. Gapsted Wines does not endorse or advocate for any of the providers mentioned in this article.
