Our winemakers have chosen some of their favourite wines to be released in our Valley Selection range.
Our Winemaker Toni Pla Bou selected our Valley Selection 2022 Tempranillo as his go-to wine this season: “I love Tempranillo because of my Spanish heritage, but also because I love working with it – it’s a canvas that rewards careful winemaking. Our Valley Selection Tempranillo is a beautiful example of an age worthy wine.”
As the wine breathes, fresh aromas of red and black fruits, complemented by delicate hints of rosewater and violet, emerge from the glass. The complexity deepens with inviting oak notes that beckon a taste. On the palate, vibrant flavours of red and black mulberries, blood plums, and redcurrants are beautifully intertwined with subtle oak undertones of mocha and chocolate. This Tempranillo showcases the hallmark of a cool climate with its natural acidity and finely ripened tannins, which gracefully intertwine, carrying the wine’s rich flavours across the palate to a long, persistent finish.
The fruit for our Valley Selection 2022 Tempranillo was sourced from Acacia Park Vineyard, established in 1980 by the Murtagh family in the cool climate wine region of King Valley. The vineyard features a gently sloping easterly aspect with red volcanic soils rich in basalt. Situated nearly 400 meters above sea level, it benefits from natural rainfall, with the basalt retaining moisture to support the vines during warm weather, providing drought resistance. The vineyard is hand-pruned and positioned to ensure even ripening and shade, protecting the grapes from sunburn.
Our careful winemaking began with harvesting the low-yielding grapes at their perfect ripeness The wine was aged in a mix of new American and old French oak over 18 months with minimal handling to retain the unique regional and vineyard characteristics.
Pair it with a roast rack of lamb seasoned with garlic and herbs for an exceptional culinary experience. While irresistibly drinkable now, this wine promises to age gracefully, revealing even more depth over time.
