Unveiling the Timeless Elegance: A Journey Through the History of Chardonnay
In the vast world of wines, few varieties evoke the same level of sophistication and versatility as Chardonnay. Its journey from ancient vineyards to modern wine cellars is as rich and complex as its flavour profile. Let's embark on a captivating exploration of the history of Chardonnay, tracing its origins, evolution, and enduring appeal.
Chardonnay's roots trace back to the Burgundy region of France, where it is believed to have originated during the Middle Ages. Early records suggest that monks played a significant role in cultivating Chardonnay vines in the fertile soils of Burgundy, where they recognised its potential to produce exquisite wines.
It wasn't until the Middle Ages that Chardonnay began to gain recognition beyond the borders of Burgundy. Its adaptability to different terroirs and winemaking techniques made it a favourite among winemakers throughout France and eventually across Europe.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Chardonnay is its ability to reflect the unique characteristics of the terroir in which it is grown. From the limestone-rich soils of Chablis to the cool-climate of the Alpine and King Valleys, Chardonnay showcases a remarkable diversity of flavours and aromas influenced by its environment.
One of the defining characteristics of many Chardonnay wines is their aging in oak barrels. This practice, popularised in Burgundy, imparts complex flavours of vanilla, butter, and toast to the wine, adding depth and richness to its profile.
Today, Chardonnay continues to captivate wine lovers around the world with its timeless appeal.
We invite you to celebrate this noble variety with the release of our Valley Selection 2023 King Valley Chardonnay. This wine is currently only available to purchase online, so you can be among the very first to experience its elegance.
Valley Selection 2023 Chardonnay
Crafted from fruit from Evans Vineyard in the King Valley and aged in a mix of new and old French oak barrels, this Chardonnay displays intense aromas of ripe white stone fruit and citrus pith, with grilled almonds, ginger spice and subtle flint. The palate has ripe stonefruit flavours beautifully balanced with citrus and red apple dancing in the background along with the integrated French oak characters. The creamy mouthfeel texture from fine lees ageing is supported by refined acidity giving the wine focus and purpose. The finish is precise and the savoury nuttiness leaves a tactile sensation that is long and persistent. Enjoy with the flavours of a Saganaki cheese, maple smoked bacon, pineapple, spinach and Kewpie mayo burger on a milk bun.
